My wife and I attended a discussion of Pride and Prejudice put on by the Eastern Washington/Northern Idaho chapter of JASNA. It wasn't until later that I got to thinking about what a modern reader should know to help understand the story. A couple things jumped into my mind. I thought having an understanding of an entail would be helpful for this book. I don't think that a precise understanding of different carriages would be terribly important, though there is the issue of the hackney coach that Wickham and Lydia transferred used when running away.
What do you think the modern reader should know to better appreciate P&P?

i think the modern reader might want to know why the soldiers were stationed in Meryton.

These are both good reasons to read annotated editions of any book from the period. Granted, there are inaccuracies in any annotated book, but there are also some really interesting tidbits also.

I really like the books annotated by David M Shapard. I have all six novels.
