In addition to the announcement that ITV is going to produce a new P&P miniseries (P&P4 I guess), Janeites in Brazil have gone crazy with the news that there is going to be a tv adaptation of P&P in their country as well. As a friend in Brazil has explained, it will be a soap opera inspired by P&P titled Pride and Passion. I am not familiar with Brazilian soap operas but I am a bit intrigued by this adaptation.
I have not seen the Italian and Dutch P&P adaptations, which may give me an idea of what to expect. Though I have seen the non-English language adaptations made in Spain for E, NA and P.

The founder of the JASNA chapter I belong to is from Brazil. I wonder if she's heard about this. Unfortunately, because of Irma, our meeting for Saturday has been cancelled, bhut I will definitely ask her.

Do you think the new Brazil tv series'Pride and Passion' be a fan fiction of P&P? Hope it'll be fun and, well, not too soapy.

It might be like a fanfiction, Mandy. I have never seen Brazilian soap-operas, so I am completely ignorant of what to expect, but judging from the excitement among some Brazilian friends and also other people at the group in Spanish who have seen this kind of produtions, it might be entertaining. I tend to be less strict when they are not Regency period adaptations. I love B&P and also LBD, the only one that has been difficult to digest is the Unleashing Mr Darcy movie .

Yes agree, fanfictions which don't pretend to be to-the-letter JA adaptations can still retain the story and be really fun. I confess to my sneaky enjoyment of watching bits of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies on you tube; I like how the scenes begin in the formal way before launching into the ninja action. lol ! Darcy's first proposal to Lizzy. I am also guilty of finding Murder at Pemberley quite amusing. Golly, Darcy as judge for a dog show ? I guess Darcy is a conossieur of the good life and gentlemanly things but it sounds absurd. Hee ! If not for utilizing the Darcy and Elizabeth names I am unsure I'd realize Unleasing Mr Darcy is meant to be another P&P fanfiction drama. ;-)
Surely we can hope for better things from the Brazilan P&P fan fiction; even if abit soaped !

I loved PP&Z. I thought it was one of the funniest things I'd seen in years. The first proposal scene is absolutely priceless.

I do not know if you had been able to watch this Brazilian soap-opera. It is in its fourth week and from the first one was completely diverging from the books, so yes, it is definitely like watching a fanfiction. It is "freely inspired" [I'm quoting the credits) by Jane Austen's works, so not only P&P gets into the pot, but also has borrowed from the second S in S&S, there is a Susana (Lady Susan) and allegedly NA (though not much) and there is a Fanny Pricelli (not at all similar to the original Fanny Price, and neither to the Fanny from MP2, here is more a villain). Therefore, I should move this thread to the AOA board (as soon as I can figure it out how to do it). It is set a century later than the novels (early 20th Century) in a fictional Brazilian valley.
I cannot judge properly the script, because it is completely spoken in Portuguese, without subtitles, so I only half-understand the dialogue, by mixing my knowledge of other Romance languages (my own Spanish, my very rusty French and a very basic Italian). What it has surprised me is the production quality (costume design, production design and some cinematography). It is not the high-end British period tv drama, but definitely not low-end, like some Mexican productions.
For the moment it holds my attention, how longer, I do not know. According to Brazilian friends, soap-operas run 150 episodes on average, and they run weekly from Monday to Saturday. So it still has many months ahead.
