I think lots of people are familiar with lady detective the Honourable Miss Phyrne Fisher of the Miss Fisher Mysteries tv series. I've just read the first Miss Fisher book by Kerry Greenwood. Phryne, newly arrived in 1920s' Australia from London society, to check up on the daughter of a family friend proves she cannot keep herself out of crimes' way in Melbourne ! Must admit, I enjoyed the lavish descriptions of Miss Fisher's costumes and exotic Russian characters as much as the action ! Most of the regulars from the TV series are in the story; Dr Mac, Bert and Cec, detective inspector Jack Robinson and the faithful Dot. There are lots of Miss Fisher books, not to mention tv epsidodes; so I'd be interested to know any thoughts ?

I have seen the TV series, but I had not noticed it was based on books. I will have to put them on my Wish List. Thanks for the recommendation, Mandy.

You are most welcome Cythia...I am going to read a few more Miss Fisher books. And if Phyrne goes to Spain or Brazil (and we know she does fly her own plane) I will let you know ;-)

I started Book 1, and can't remember why I put it down. I know the books end up being very different from the series (especially when it comes to Phryne's relationship with Jack), but I just love the series. I gather there may be a movie at some point.

Currently, I'm reading in the Miss Fisher mysteries; 'Murder at Montparnasse'. So far there's only been a disappearance of a rich girl with a ransom note for half a million dollars. The kidnappers are giving her father time to come up with the money. Our foxy Miss Fisher is on the case as a private investigator. So far Inspector Jack Robinson is in the story but not involved as the missing person hasn't been officially reported. What I find engrossing are Phyrne's flashbacks to Paris at the end of the Great War (ninety years ago!) posing for modernist artists including Sarchelle. An interesting idea by the author Kerry Greenwood because, I think, Pierre Sarchelle was some famous real life artist in Paris at this time. The book 'Murder at Montparnasse' was the basis for a Miss Fisher episode on TV. Yes, the Phyrne and Jack relationship is different in the books. They are quite good friends but Jack is married to his wife Rosie. Compared to his drama personae Jack seems an older domesticated man but can't cook. Miss Fisher is involved with Mr Lin whose about to make an arranged marriage and the scandalized Mr Butler has just given notice to Miss Fisher. Kerry Greenwood's book is readable but slow moving, and fewer gorgeous details of Phyrne's gowns ;-) I think the TV episode which included some art theft was better written and pacey. The Miss Fisher Mysteries have great visual impact on-screen and the dynamic between Jack and Phyne is tantalizing. In the books they are not so fun, not a couple in any way. Yes, Indeed ! There's been rumours circulating for a while of a Miss Fisher film and more recently, the possibility for Miss Fisher series 4 to be filmed in the UK. (is someone totally dreaming !?) I reckon fans will demand Essie Davies continue the Miss Fisher role, so pray they can assemble the original cast members for Dot, Constable Hugh not to mention Nathan Buckley as Inspector Jack Robinson. Oh pardon, didn't mean to chatter on so !

I love Mr. Butler in the series. I'm sorry he leaves in the books. But then, I was warned at how many differences there are.
As for the possible film, someone told me that there's a crowd funding effort going forward for it. But I don't know the details. I'll have to poke around the Internet to see what I can find.

www.kickstarter.com/projects/468758721/miss-fisher-the-movie Hi Julie, Finally back in action after one painful toothache kept me out of action. Ack! You must see this; the crowd funding page for the Miss Fisher film. :-) Honestly, I think it is worth viewing just to view the videos with Nathan & co. Team Miss Fisher is attempting to reach out to their world wide fan base to assist with the crowd funding and support; fingers crossed this link works ! The new Miss Fisher film is currently titled 'Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears'. An Indiana Jones style screenplay, and, according to all the publicity hype filming in exotic overseas locations also in Melbourne city. I wonder if they are hoping to create a film reminiscent of Lara Croft rather than Miss Phyrne Fisher ? Well, no doubt it'll be entertaining and the unflappable Miss Fisher can handle Anything with a glass of champagne in one hand and her pearl-handled gun in her garter ! Ooh! Back to the Crowd Funding effort- they've passed an initial target of AUS $ 5000,000 and are still taking pledges for the next 16 days. Bigger is better apparently. Some of the rewards are mind boggling ! A pledge two thousand dollars will buy an item from Miss Fisher's own glorious wardrobe. I must satisfy myself with a Miss Fisher tote bag- for now. As they will film in Mlebourne, I do hope they include members of Miss Fisher's extended family such as Bert, Cec, Janey and Mr Butler...! Oh! In Kerry Greenwood's novel 'Murder in Montparnesse', Mr and Mrs Butler change their mind and do not leave the employment of the Honourable Miss Phyne Fisher; isn't that nice ?

Update - the film will premiere in Australia on February 20th, and Acorn will show it in "selected" cinemas in North America at some point afterwards. And then it will stream on the Acorn app.

I saw the film on Acorn when it was released and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was tons of fun.
The same people who make Miss Fisher have expanded into a Ms. Fisher series which takes place in 1960s Australia. Of course, there's a handsome detective who's a love interest, but the show's not quite as much fun as the original. The 60s clothes are great, however, and bring back memories!
